Driving while intoxicated is illegal in Texas and all other states. Yet, some people might not be aware when they’ve had too much to drink and may attempt to drive home after celebrating. Receiving a DWI charge can be humiliating and cause irreparable damage to a person’s reputation.

DWI arrests

During this year’s Fiesta celebration in San Antonio, it was reported that over 100 people were arrested for DWI. According to reports from the San Antonio Police Department, 104 DWI arrests were made during the 11-day festival. While this is a lot of arrests, the numbers were down from last year. Reportedly, 146 drunk driving arrests were logged during Fiesta in 2023.

The San Antonio Police Department said nearly half of this year’s DWI arrests happened during the first weekend of the celebration. Officers encouraged citizens to have a sober ride planned any time they plan on consuming alcohol, not just during the Fiesta celebration. Police noted that they are out in full force every night patrolling for intoxicated drivers.

Legal options

Laws in Texas take a firm stand against impaired driving. If convicted, first-time DWI offenders could potentially face hefty fines, jail time and loss of driving privileges. Nevertheless, Texas drivers who are charged with DWI should know that they have options available to help them defend against these types of charges. Every individual who is criminally charged has the right to legal representation. Acquiring the services of an experienced criminal law attorney could help those accused obtain the best possible outcome relative to his or her situation while ensuring that their rights are protected.
