For many college students in Texas, spring break is a time to let loose and shake off the monotony of college life. Unfortunately, some spring breakers take the celebration too far and get behind the wheel while intoxicated. In an attempt to curb drunk driving crashes during spring break, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recently announced they are launching a campaign to spread awareness of the effects of driving while intoxicated.
Drive Sober. No Regrets.
The statewide campaign, known as Drive Sober. No Regrets, is being launched by TxDOT along with campus-based U in the Drive Seat. TxDOT said they plan to show the consequences of drunk driving through an exhibit called “DUI Not So Fun House”, which will be shown at spring break locations and college campuses across the state. The exhibit allows people to experience the effects of alcohol and the dangers of drunk driving.
According to reports, over 800 alcohol-related traffic accidents occurred in Texas during the 2022 spring break season. Reportedly, 44 people were killed and 90 others were seriously injured in those crashes. TxDOT’s executive director said they want students to know it’s easy to celebrate safely during spring break by finding a sober ride, using a rideshare, taking a cab or just staying put after drinking.
Help for those charged
Being arrested and charged with DWI can turn a fun road trip into a disaster. Even if a driver passes sobriety tests, they can still be arrested if officers reasonably suspect impairment. Those in Texas who have been charged with DWI should know that they have options available to help defend against these types of charges. An experienced criminal defense attorney can protect individual rights while working to achieve the best possible outcome.
